TV shows on neighbor disputes

The popular media have ushered in a social movement away from traditional neighborly behavior, and Borzotta calls them the Nouveaux Trashe. Born and raised far from trailer parks and slums, this set of losers makes a conscious choice to be un-neighborly because they're told it's fun and sexy to be that way.

TV shows on neighbor disputes

As you all know, I get hounded by producers interested in developing a neighbor dispute show, and have been for about five years now. Mostly, they want my database, my facts and figures, my input, etc., so they can develop a piece of trash that will appeal to lowest-common-denominator viewers. Unfortunately, networks and cable channels aren't looking for much high-brow content, since there ain't a lot of audience share there.

If an intelligent program that examined the subject in all its drama, still fairly, were to come from me, where might you expect to see it? Network prime time? Cable outfits like TLC/truTV/HGTV? General syndication? Nowhere?

Radio remains the easiest venue for me, and that's still being pursued. Pre-production is a breeze, there are fewer mouths to feed (TV requires much more staffing), and I can do live call-ins without subjecting NFH victims to the gaze of the audience, which may be dominated by the Nouveaux Trashe. But TV exposes the subject much more (and has greater book sales potential).

Any thoughts?

since tv and journalist want to present both sides of the story the NFH will get some sympathy. They (NFH) are the perps,we're just outing them for targeting us and we'll end up looking like the bad guys. This is the view from previous attempts to bring this to light.

I think the best place would be the likes of HGTV/TLC/PBS/etc. right along side all the other home care/troubleshooting/DIY shows (I doubt NFH frequent PBS, so they won't pick up any pointers)....And it should have the same approach, NFH not as people but objectively as problems/pests, no different than a leaky roof ...or better yet... raccoons getting in the trash. You don't talk to the raccoons about keeping out of the trash, you just do whatever needs doing to make it stop. Same for NFH, their side is moot, just fix the problem to improve the homeowners/sufferers quality of life.

Hah! This is great imagery!

I also just used a "natural" image in a recent legal draft regarding my NsFH - "Like swollen ticks on a hound dog, they will bloody anyone who tries to dislodge them."

Keep up the good writing.

Danke nm, I will! 8)

At least raccoons & ticks have a legitimate reason for their behaviors (survival), where as NFH generally do what they do out of maliciousness.

Sorry, xyz, I missed the embedded quote markers on my last post. (We wouldn't want Bob to get more credit than he deserves. ) Maybe we need a new thread comparing our NsFH to various vermin.

The Christian Science Monitor has written some good articles on the effects of noise over the years.

I can't think of any television media that would create greater awareness on neighbor issues and especially the issue of noisy neighbors. I would like to see more "my old house" programs that discuss quieter indoor and outside products. More emphasis on the lawn and garden programs for push reel mowers, brooms and rakes rather than products that appeal to the manly way of showing who's got the loudest lawn equipment in the neighborhood.

One of those channels has a show "Bodacious Back Yards," featuring motorized go-carts, amped-up sound systems, etc. PBS maybe, but HG just likes silly, goofy, light stuff.

Re:HG - Usually...yeah, but amazingly enough they have "Holmes On Homes" now, which is pure problem solving. So maybe there is hope for them yet.

Mike Holmes is the future of reality TV, for my money. His company name is Make It Right Productions, and that's what he does. If I could do a show with that format, where I go in and solve real problems, I'd do it in a flash.
